President Zardari Announces Special Sentence Remission for Select Prisoners on Independence Day

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has declared a ninety-day remission of sentences for certain categories of prisoners in celebration of Independence Day, emphasizing a gesture of leniency under specific constitutional provisions.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the remission, authorized under Article 45 of the Constitution of Pakistan, excludes prisoners convicted of severe crimes such as anti-state activities, espionage, murder, rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, financial crimes that impact the national exchequer, violations of the Foreigners Act 1946, and the Narcotics Control (Amendment) Act 2022.

This policy extends to elderly male prisoners aged 65 and above, and females over 60 who have served at least one-third of their sentence. Additionally, the remission applies to female prisoners incarcerated with their children and to young individuals under the age of eighteen.
