Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed disappointment over the United Nations’ failure to uphold its Charter equitably, particularly in matters concerning the right to self-determination for people living under foreign occupation, such as in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the prime minister made his remarks on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the United Nations, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
In a social media post on X, Prime Minister Sharif stated, “As long as the provisions of the UN’s founding document are ignored, the crises will continue to deepen,” stressing the need to recommit to the objectives of the UN Charter, which are meant to form the foundation of a peaceful and prosperous world.
The prime minister pointed to the growing number of international conflicts, climate change, rising geopolitical tensions, and the economic difficulties faced by the Global South as signs of a world order in disarray. He emphasized that at the core of these global challenges is the UN’s inability to apply its Charter equally, particularly in addressing the right to self-determination for people living under occupation, including those in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s dedication to multilateralism, Prime Minister Sharif reiterated the country’s commitment to working with the UN to create a better world for all, ensuring that the rights of those struggling for justice and legitimate self-determination are realized.
