Srinagar: Residents of several villages in Budgam district, located in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, have taken to the streets to protest the installation of smart electricity meters. They argue that this initiative underscores the administration’s disregard for the financial challenges that ordinary Kashmiris face.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, a significant demonstration occurred in Chek-i-Kawoosa village, where a large group of women blocked the road and voiced their opposition to the new metering system. The protesters demand an immediate rollback, expressing concerns that the smart meters will lead to increased electricity bills, exacerbating financial pressures on families already struggling to make ends meet.
“We can barely afford basic needs, and now these smart meters will make life unbearable,” stated one of the protesting women. The sentiment reflects widespread dissatisfaction, as residents accuse officials of prioritizing policies that negatively impact low-income families while failing to address their economic difficulties.
A local elder commented on the situation, describing the initiative as a policy disconnected from the realities faced by the community. The protests highlight increasing resentment among Kashmiris, who perceive such measures as further evidence of the administration’s indifference to their hardships.
