Lahore: In a significant move to reinforce the enforcement of the Anti-Rape Investigation and Trial Act 2021, an important meeting was convened at the Central Police Office, chaired by Additional IG Investigation Punjab, Muhammad Idrees Ahmad. The session, which included key investigative officers from across Punjab, aimed to ensure stringent adherence to the legislation designed to improve the investigation and prosecution of rape cases.
According to Punjab Police, Muhammad Idrees Ahmad, who provided a detailed briefing on the provisions of the Act, emphasized the critical need for strict compliance. He outlined that investigations of scheduled crimes, particularly rape, would now be managed exclusively by the Specialized Sexual Offences Investigation Units (SSOIU), which comprise 115 units with over 1,050 trained officers throughout the province.
During the meeting, Idrees Ahmad issued directives to assign the investigation of scheduled crimes solely to the SSOIU, ensuring that any dissatisfaction expressed by complainants or victims with the initial investigations would lead to immediate case transfers to either an SP or SSP for direct oversight. He insisted on rectifying deficiencies in current investigative processes and enhancing the effectiveness of court-related proceedings in alignment with the Anti-Rape Act and standing orders. The additional IG also called for the expedited resolution of pending legal proceedings, particularly challans, in Lahore and Faisalabad.
The assembly was also attended by key officials including DIG Investigation Punjab Azhar Akram and SSPs from various departments, emphasizing the high priority placed on improving the handling of sexual offence cases across the region.
