Release all political prisoners including Gautam Navlakha immediately: PUDR

New Delhi, April 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Peoples Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) has demanded immediate release of all political detainees, including a well-known Indian human rights activist and civil society member, Gautam Navlakha. Gautam Navlakha’ was arrested by notorious India’s National Investigation Agency on 28 August 2018 in the Indian capital city New Delhi. The PUDR members, Joseph Mathai and Paramjeet Singh, in their joint statement said that Gautam went to jail when the COVID-19 had just begun, and was kept in the high security cell from October 2021. The trial is yet to begin, he is not implicated in any other cases, and yet he continues to be in jail.

Gautam is someone who has always spoken out for the rights of the marginalised and striven to protect these. A firm believer that justice delayed is justice denied, and a critic of the black law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) where the process is the punishment, Gautam today exemplifies just these very rights’ violations that he has striven against all his life, the statement added. Today we, his fellow activists in PUDR, reiterate that justice delayed is indeed justice denied and demand the immediate release of Gautam Navlakha, the PUDR statement said.
