Return of Kashmiri Pandits Viewed as Humanitarian, Not Political, Says Mirwaiz

Srinagar: Senior leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has stated that the return of Kashmiri Pandits should be approached as a humanitarian issue rather than a political one, emphasizing the need for their reintegration without linking it to the broader Kashmir dispute.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz, in a media interview, expressed the willingness of the Muslim community in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir to welcome back Kashmiri Pandits. He highlighted the shared heritage of the Pandits and the Muslim community, urging for their return to their ancestral homes where they once lived in harmony.

Mirwaiz mentioned his repeated appeals from the Jamia Masjid pulpit for the Pandits’ return, emphasizing that their rehabilitation requires a collective effort. He noted the responsibility of the majority community in facilitating their return, while also encouraging efforts to bridge any existing differences.

In discussions with Kashmiri Pandit delegations, Mirwaiz underscored the need for trust-building and unity. He recounted a recent meeting where both sides explored potential steps for collaboration, aiming to foster a path forward.

Currently in New Delhi, Mirwaiz is engaging with Muslim leaders and intellectuals on issues impacting Muslims, such as the Waqf Bill. He reinforced the commitment of the Kashmiri Muslim community to peaceful coexistence with the Pandits, recalling the longstanding bond between the communities.
