Senate By-elections Scheduled for Six Vacant Seats on Thursday

Islamabad, The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced that by-elections for six vacant seats in the Senate will be conducted on Thursday, aiming to fill positions that became available following the election of several senators to the National Assembly and provincial assemblies.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the polling will take place at the National Assembly in Islamabad, as well as the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies in Karachi and Quetta, respectively. The vacancies arose after Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri transitioned to the National Assembly and other senators, including Nisar Ahmed Khoro and Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar, to the Sindh Assembly, with Prince Ahmed Umer Ahmedzai and Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti moving to the Balochistan Assembly.

In response to these vacancies, the Election Commission of Pakistan has appointed returning officers in Islamabad and the four provinces—Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan—to oversee the Senate elections. This by-election will fill one general and one technocrat seat, including Ulema, in the federal capital, as well as additional seats across the provinces.

The commission has also urged members of the provincial assemblies to participate in electing representatives for seven general seats, two women’s seats, and two technocrat seats, including Ulema, from each province. Additionally, one seat for non-Muslims from both Punjab and Sindh will be filled, coinciding with the expiration of terms for the current senators.
