Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar has warned of a possible escalation in ethnic tensions in Maharashtra, drawing parallels to the prolonged conflict in Manipur between the Kuki and Meitei communities.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Pawar voiced his concerns during a public event in Navi Mumbai, attributing the potential for violence in Maharashtra to what he perceives as the central government’s failure to uphold unity and law and order. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his inadequate handling of the ethnic clashes in Manipur, suggesting that similar issues could arise in Maharashtra if not managed carefully.
The NCP chief emphasized the importance of Maharashtra’s historical commitment to harmony and equality, crediting local leaders for their efforts in maintaining peace thus far. However, he highlighted growing tensions between the Maratha and Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities over reservation disputes, stressing the need for more dialogue and governmental intervention to prevent misunderstandings and potential violence.
Pawar’s recent discussions with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde focused on these community tensions, underscoring his concerns about the state potentially facing situations akin to those in Manipur under the current national leadership.
