Karachi: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Sindh has intensified its efforts to manage the severe heatwave affecting the region, with various initiatives underway since May 21, 2024.
According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the PDMA and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) are meticulously monitoring the heatwave through a coordinated response plan. This includes the establishment of 294 heat stabilization camps across various districts, set up with the support of 40 humanitarian partners. These camps aim to provide immediate relief and safety measures to those affected by the extreme temperatures.
Efforts to educate the public on the dangers of heatwaves have been robust, featuring distribution of informational materials and extensive awareness campaigns across print, electronic, and social media, all approved by PDMA. Additionally, dedicated teams led by Deputy Commissioners and Chairmen of DDMAs are regularly inspecting these camps to ensure efficient operations.
Transportation and referral services to Heat Stroke Centers and hospitals are being facilitated for those severely affected. In a bid to create more sustainable environments, some districts have also initiated plantation drives.
The comprehensive response highlights the commitment of local authorities and humanitarian organizations to safeguard residents against the harsh impacts of the heatwave.
