Sindh Minister Predicts Significant Impact from Kenjhar Lake Floating Solar Project

Karachi: Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah anticipates transformative outcomes from the recently held stakeholders’ workshop for the 500MW floating solar power project on Kenjhar Lake. This initiative, part of a broader effort to engage private investment in renewable energy, was organized by the Energy Department of the Government of Sindh in collaboration with the UN.

According to Directorate General Information and PRs – Sindh, the workshop included strategic partners like the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). It aimed to foster dialogue among various governmental sectors including energy, irrigation, investment, agriculture, and forestry, highlighting the renewable project’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Held at the Movenpick Hotel in Karachi, the event featured key speakers like Ms. Amara Durrani from UNDP Pakistan and Mr. Glen Hodes from UN DESA, who discussed innovative financing methods for the SDGs. The workshop also provided a platform for presenting the technical and financial details of the 500 MW project, addressing potential information gaps and developing a unified framework for its feasibility. The session underscored the project’s innovative aspects and potential to catalyze economic growth in Sindh through sustainable energy solutions.

The discussion, led by UNDP’s Climate Finance Expert Hameed Rasheed and Sindh’s Director of Alternative Energy Mahfooz Qazi, engaged participants in a productive dialogue about the project’s prospects and challenges. This collaborative session highlighted the pivotal role of public and private sectors in achieving SDG targets and advancing regional energy goals.

Concluding the workshop, Mahfooz Qazi expressed gratitude towards UNDP Pakistan for its support in feasibility studies and assured continuous cooperation from the Sindh government with the project sponsors M/s Go Energy Pvt Ltd. This initiative marks a crucial step in attracting foreign investment and fostering high-impact development projects aligned with global sustainability objectives.
