Sindh Responds to Heatwave with Extensive Relief Efforts

Karachi: In response to the severe heatwave of 2024, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh, along with District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), has been actively implementing a comprehensive Heatwave Response Plan since May. This initiative includes the establishment of numerous heat stabilization camps across the province to protect vulnerable populations.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, from May 21 to July 22, a coordinated effort with 40 humanitarian partners has led to the establishment of 294 heat stabilization camps. These camps are equipped to provide immediate relief and safety measures for affected individuals. Additionally, the partners have engaged in widespread community awareness campaigns, distributing educational materials and conducting sessions to educate the public on the dangers of heatwaves and preventive strategies.

The PDMA’s report also highlights the deployment of dedicated teams, including Deputy Commissioners and Chairmen of DDMAs, who are regularly visiting these camps to ensure their effective operation and to oversee the safe transportation of patients requiring urgent care to Heat Stroke Centers and hospitals. In an effort to combat the rising temperatures, a Plantation Drive has also been initiated in several districts, aimed at increasing green cover and reducing ambient temperatures.
