KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has successfully completed a workover operation at the Adam West X-1 ST well in the Hala Block, district Matiari, Sindh. This operation marks a significant milestone for PPL, which holds a 65 percent working interest in the block alongside its joint venture partner, Mari Energies Limited, which holds the remaining 35 percent.
The Adam West field, which initially discovered hydrocarbons in the Lower Goru formation in September 2014, began production in June 2015. However, by 2019, gas production was halted due to a water breakthrough in the well. Initial attempts to isolate the water-producing zones were unsuccessful, leading to a decision to pursue sidetracking as a viable solution.
The recent workover operation, which commenced in October 2025, involved drilling a sidetrack to bypass the lower water-producing zones. This challenging project, executed with precise planning, resulted in the successful testing of the well at gas rates of approximately 8.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) at a wellhead pressure of 540 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) and a choke size of 58/64 inches.
The Adam West X-1 sidetrack will soon be connected to the Hala facilities following the demobilization of the rig. PPL remains committed to enhancing Pakistan’s energy security and contributing to the country’s economic growth and prosperity.
