Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Assumes Role as Senate Chairman in Pakistan

Islamabad, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been sworn in as the Chairman of the Senate, marking a significant political development in Pakistan’s legislative landscape.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the oath of office was administered by Presiding Officer Ishaq Dar. Gilani’s elevation to this key parliamentary position was secured unopposed, as he was the sole candidate following the absence of other nominations.

In his inaugural address as Chairman, Gilani thanked the PPP and its allies for their trust and support, pledging to serve as a unifying figure for the Senate. He emphasized his commitment to fostering dialogue, strengthening parliamentary integrity, and avoiding partisan conflicts. Gilani also lamented the presence of divisive elements in politics, reaffirming the PPP’s commitment to reconciliation and public welfare.

Alongside Gilani, Saidal Khan Nasar was sworn in as the Deputy Chairman of the Senate, also running unopposed. The ceremony for Nasar was conducted by Chairman Gilani himself.

The session was attended by prominent political figures, including Leader of the House Ishaq Dar and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) leader Atta-ur-Rehman, who congratulated Gilani on his new role. Additionally, the Senate session included a prayer tribute to victims of recent terrorist attacks.

With the formal swearing-in of its new leaders, the Senate session was subsequently prorogued.
