Lahore: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) has established an 11-member committee to negotiate with the government over the controversial Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival (LAHR) Project. The committee, led by LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman Saigol, aims to find a solution that preserves Lahore’s historical sites without compromising the livelihoods of long-standing traders.
Saigol emphasized the need for practical solutions, rejecting proposals to relocate traders to basement markets, which he argued would harm commercial viability due to decreased foot traffic and visibility. The LCCI is committed to ensuring that urban development plans do not disproportionately affect small traders.
The committee will review the government’s plans for constructing underground markets and parking areas at Taxali, Sheranwala, and Mochi Gates. It will provide recommendations that align heritage restoration with the economic needs of over 2,000 affected shopkeepers.
Saigol assured that the Chamber would facilitate transparent and fair negotiations, aiming for a development model that respects both cultural heritage and economic realities. Formal discussions with relevant government bodies are set to begin shortly.
