Tributes to Farooq, Lone on onset of Martyrdom Week

Srinagar, May 16, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, glowing tributes were paid to prominent liberation leaders, Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone on the commencement of Martyrdom Week, today, to commemorate the martyrdom anniversaries of the martyred leaders.

People attended in large number the functions of the recitation of Holy Quran that were held at APHC and Awami Majlis Amal headquarters in Srinagar. Prayers were offered for the departed souls of Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone, martyrs of Hawal and Muhammad Afzal Guru.

It was on 21st May in 1990, when unidentified gunmen shot at Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq in Srinagar martyred him on the spot. On the same day seventy mourners were killed when Indian troops fired at the funeral procession of the martyred in Hawal area of Srinagar. Twelve years later, on the same day in 2002, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone was martyred by unknown attackers, when he was returning from addressing a gathering at Mazar-e-Shuhada in Srinagar.

Senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmad Shah addressing a party meeting in Srinagar stressed the need for better coordination and unity in ranks and files of pro-freedom leaders and organisations to thwart conspiracies directed at sabotaging the Kashmir freedom movement. The meeting was held to pay tributes to Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone.

The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Movement, Ghulam Ahmad Mir addressing a function in Rajouri paid homage to the martyred, Shahid Khurshid on his 11th martyrdom anniversary.

The Kashmiri Civil Society Group after the conclusion of a two-day seminar organised by the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation in a joint statement issued in Srinagar demanded immediate and unconditional release of all illegally detained Kashmiri Hurriyet leaders languishing in different jails of India and the occupied territory.

In Brussels, the Chairman of International Council for Human Rights, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo addressing a roundtable stressed the importance of the International Day of Families, which he said, makes people remember the plight of divided families in Jammu and Kashmir who are facing for more than 65 years the impediments that hinder them from meeting their relatives across the ceasefire line.
