Trudeau Addresses Security Concerns of Sikh Community on Khalsa Day in Toronto

Toronto, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the Sikh community’s security concerns during Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto, amid pro-Khalistan slogans from attendees.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Trudeau used his speech to reaffirm the rights and freedoms of Sikh Canadians, underscoring that Sikh values are integral to Canadian values. He pledged to bolster security at Sikh community centers and places of worship, reflecting a commitment to protect the community against discrimination and hatred.

The event, which commemorates the founding of the Sikh community in 1699 and marks the Sikh New Year, attracted thousands to downtown Toronto. It is organized annually by the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwaras Council and is one of Canada’s largest cultural parades.

Trudeau’s remarks come at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions between Canada and India, particularly following the assassination of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023, which Ottawa has linked to external influences. The Prime Minister’s commitment to the Sikh community highlights the ongoing efforts to navigate complex cultural and international relationships.
