UN Human Rights Chief Criticizes Georgian Authorities Over Protest Handling

Geneva, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk has expressed concern over the “unnecessary and disproportionate use of force” by police against protesters and media personnel in Tbilisi, amid ongoing demonstrations against the controversial draft Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence in Georgia.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, thousands of Georgians have taken to the streets in protest of the proposed legislation, which critics say could undermine freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Turk emphasized that any use of force by law enforcement should be a last resort and strictly adhere to international norms of legality, necessity, and proportionality.

Turk also urged the Georgian government to conduct thorough and transparent investigations into allegations of misconduct by security forces and to immediately release any individuals detained arbitrarily during the protests. Further, he called on protestors to maintain peaceful methods in expressing their dissent.

Highlighting the potential implications of the draft law, Turk warned that labeling NGOs and media organizations that receive foreign funding as agents of foreign interests could severely restrict civil liberties. He advocated for the withdrawal of the draft law and encouraged a constructive dialogue between the authorities, civil society, and the media to find a resolution.
