Karachi, In a message marking World Environment Day, UN Secretary-General emphasized the critical need for international cooperation on land restoration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resilience. The theme for this year’s observance underscores the vital importance of restoring ecosystems to safeguard the future of both land and humanity.
According to United Nations Pakistan, the Secretary-General highlighted the detrimental effects of pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss, which are transforming fertile lands into deserts and causing economic and social instability. He pointed out the necessity of fulfilling commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and integrating ecosystem restoration into national climate action plans.
The message stressed the economic rationality of investing in ecosystem restoration, noting that every dollar invested can generate up to thirty dollars in economic benefits. The Secretary-General called for increased financial support for developing countries to adapt to climate impacts, protect nature, and promote sustainable development, framing the current generation as “Generation Restoration” tasked with building a sustainable future.
