UNESCO Director-General Condemns Killing of Journalist in Palestine

Paris, The Director-General of UNESCO has publicly condemned the killing of journalist Yasser Mamdouh El-Fady in Palestine, who was reportedly killed by sniper fire while on assignment near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. El-Fady was working for Kan’an News Agency at the time of his death.

According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, this tragic event adds to the growing number of journalists and media workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty in Palestine. Since October 2023, at least 26 journalists and media workers have been reported dead under circumstances connected to their professional activities, excluding those killed in situations unrelated to their work.

UNESCO emphasizes its ongoing commitment to promoting the safety of journalists worldwide through various initiatives. These include global awareness campaigns, capacity-building efforts, and the coordination of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity. The organization’s efforts aim to create a safer environment for journalists to perform their essential role in society without fear of violence or persecution.
