WAPDA Chairman Advocates for Expanded Hydro Power to Combat Climate Change

Lahore, In a crucial meeting with a delegation of Asian Development Bank Alternate Executive Directors, WAPDA Chairman Sajjad Ghani emphasized the significant role of hydro power projects in climate change mitigation and socio-economic development.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during discussions in Lahore today, Chairman Ghani highlighted the contributions of hydroelectric power to generating green energy and its benefits for the community. He described the Asian Development Bank as a key supporter in these initiatives, expressing that WAPDA has greatly benefited from the bank’s assistance. Ghani proposed that the ADB should consider escalating its involvement with WAPDA from supporting medium-scale projects to larger, more strategic initiatives.

The Chairman outlined ambitious plans to increase the share of low-cost hydel electricity in Pakistan’s National Grid—from the current 29% to 40% by 2030 and to 50% by 2050—as part of WAPDA’s long-term strategy to enhance sustainable energy output. The delegation expressed their interest in expanding financing for upcoming WAPDA projects, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing green energy solutions in the region.
