New Delhi, In a significant move to enforce its usage policies, WhatsApp banned more than 7.1 million accounts in India during April. The action reflects the platform’s commitment to adhering to the country’s laws and maintaining a safe communication environment.
According to Kashmir Media Service, WhatsApp’s recent compliance report revealed that out of the total accounts banned, approximately 1.3 million were proactively blocked by the company before receiving any user reports. This proactive approach highlights WhatsApp’s efforts to curb misuse of its service without waiting for external complaints.
WhatsApp, which boasts over 550 million users in India, dealt with 10,554 grievances from users during the month. However, only six of these cases resulted in remedial action, which signifies that the majority of complaints did not meet the criteria for violations as per the company’s standards.
The company also responded to two orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee in India, complying with both, demonstrating its commitment to cooperate with local regulations. WhatsApp’s adherence to the new Indian IT Rules 2021 is part of its broader strategy to enhance transparency and accountability in its operations within the country.
“We will continue with transparency to our work and include information about our efforts in future reports,” said the company in a statement, reaffirming its pledge to transparency and responsible platform management.
