Yasin Malik goes on hunger strike in Kashmir

Srinagar, December 21, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the illegally-detained Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik has started hunger strike against the continued police crackdown on the residents of Maisuma and other areas of Srinagar.

Muhammad Yasin Malik, who has been brought from jail to a hospital in Srinagar for treatment, in a statement said that Indian Police and paramilitary forces had unleashed a reign of terror in the city. Nocturnal raids, arrests and other oppressive measures, he added, have made the life of residents a hell.

The JKLF Chairman said that the ongoing state terrorism had forced him to go for an indefinite hunger strike from today. Meanwhile, a protest demonstration was held in Maisuma against the excesses of police in the backdrop of overwhelming boycott of so-called elections by the people. A large number of women participated in the protest demonstration.

Hurriyet leaders Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Muhammad Yousuf Naqash in their statements in Srinagar said that the people of Kashmir should be given a chance to decide their future by themselves through exercise of right to self-determination.

Lawyers and journalists, today, staged candle-light protest demonstrations in Shopian to condemn the terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar. Members of Shopian Bar Association and Journalists Federation, Shopian participated in the protests.

The Kashmir Council EU also organized a protest in Brussels in memory of martyrs of the deadly Peshawar terrorist attack. A large number of people from all walks of life, especially members of Pakistani and Kashmiri community based in Belgium attended the event.

On the other hand, the mercury dipped further in the Valley to record the season’s lowest temperature on the start of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period. Srinagar recorded the minimum temperature of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius.
