24-children patients of Thalassemia calls on Chief Justice of Pakistan

Islamabad, April 11, 2013 (PPI-OT): A group of 24-children patients of Thalassemia Major along with their parents, doctors, President and members of Thalassemia Awareness and Prevention in Pakistan (TAPP) called on the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad today i.e. 11.04.2013.

Talking to the children the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan said that Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan guarantees equal rights to all and it is the duty of state to provide basic necessities and medical facilities to all without discrimination.

Approximately 10 Million people in Pakistan are carriers and suffering from this disease which is an alarming situation. This disease can only be controlled by taking preventive measures and spreading awareness amongst the masses.

He further added that now it is incumbent upon all of us to take steps to spread awareness so that preventive measures are taken to control the disease. He observed that few years back illegal business of liver transplantation of human organs was being carried out. Suo motu action was taken by this Court on this issue and ultimately the Federal Govt. Passed the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act 2010. As such the persons indulging in such an illegal business are being dealt with under the said law.

Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan appreciated the efforts of Ms. Ayesha Abid, President and other office bearers of Thalassemia Awareness and Prevention in Pakistan (TAPP) in promoting awareness and prevention of the disease in Pakistan so that our future generations are saved from it. He hoped that they will soon achieve the goal of a thalessemia free Pakistan.

The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan distributed bouquet of flowers and gifts among the patient children and prayed for their healthy and long life. Earlier Dr. Faqir Hussain, Registrar, Supreme Court of Pakistan welcomed the children, their parents, doctors and President and members of the Thalassemia Awareness and Prevention in Pakistan (TAPP).

The doctors briefed the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan about the causes of spread of this disease and threw light on the ways and means to control thalessemia minor and underlined the need for an effective legislation on the subject.
