3 Days Training Workshop starts

Muzaffarabad, July 18, 2012 (PPI-OT): A 3-day International training workshop on Internet Resource Management, DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) started today 18th July 2012 in Hotel Best Western, Islamabad. The technical training workshop is organized by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC).

The objective behind this training workshop is to provide a capacity building opportunity to local community members. It is noteworthy that this is the first such workshop hosted in Islamabad and facilitated by APNIC.

Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, Member (Technical), PTA inaugurated the training workshop. During his opening remarks he said that Telecommunication sector in Pakistan is highly competitive and currently the sector is rapidly migrating from circuit switching to packet switching. Almost all long distance and international service providers have deployed Next Generation Network(s) and are operating Internet Protocol (IP)-based environment in the core network.

He further said that service providers in Pakistan have already acquired IPv6 blocks and are presently carrying out test implementation plans in their networks. They are also looking forward to deploy DNSSEC protocol in their respective Internet Domain Name space.

PTA believe that with mutual understanding and coordination, this important leap towards next generation Internet Protocol and DNSSEC transition would be accomplished through necessary policy and regulatory approach. Holding such training workshops will surely assist in building local capacity building that is mandatory to equip our networks with IPv6.

The training is been attended by 40 participants across the country belonging to various stakeholders of the Internet Eco system of the country. International trainers from APNIC are conducting the training. The training workshop will also focus on providing an understanding and hands-on exposure to IPv6, its structure, operation and technical features.

IPv6 addresses, architectures, issues related to the deployment, transition and co-existence with IPv4 will also be examined. The workshop will also feature hands-on IPv6 configurations on host computers, as well as IPv6 network building and configuration scenarios.

This training workshop is a result of mutual collaboration carried out by PTA’s ICT Directorate and APNIC over the past 6 months. It is anticipated that such events will assist in promoting technical capacity building within community members while also encouraging International institutes to deliver such capacity building events in Pakistan.
