Srinagar: Over the past five years, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) has experienced a significant road safety crisis, with 28,172 road accidents recorded, leading to 8,965 fatalities and 36,615 injuries.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Indian government and the local administration in Kashmir have been criticized for their inability to improve road safety, which has resulted in a high number of deaths and injuries despite assertions of regional stability and an influx of tourism.
Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways indicates a persistent problem: in 2018, there were 5,978 accidents with 984 fatalities; in 2019, 5,796 accidents caused 996 deaths; 2020 saw 4,860 accidents and 728 deaths; in 2021, 5,452 accidents resulted in 774 fatalities; and the latest figures for 2022 show 6,092 accidents with 805 fatalities. Each year also saw thousands of injuries, underscoring the ongoing challenge to road safety in the region.
