Amartya Sen Criticizes Modi for Comments on Muslims, Calls for Apology

New Delhi, Nobel Laureate and esteemed Harvard Professor Amartya Sen has publicly condemned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent derogatory remarks about Muslims. Sen demanded an apology from Modi, emphasizing the remarks as hate speech that undermines the dignity of India’s substantial Muslim population.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a candid interview, Sen criticized Modi for characterizing Muslims as “infiltrators” at a Rajasthan election rally in April 2024, calling such comments “a terrible remark to make” and offensive. The Indian economist, who also served as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, expressed that these statements not only insult the Muslim community but degrade the entire nation. He articulated concerns about Modi’s outlook on India, suggesting it indicates “the limitations of Modi’s mind” and shows “something deeply worrying about his thinking of India.”

Sen also took issue with Modi’s claim of a divine birth and mission, dismissing it as either “megalomania” or “delusion,” and mocked Modi’s comparison of his electoral success to that of Jawaharlal Nehru as “hokum.” He further criticized the Prime Minister’s response to recent election results, highlighting Modi’s arrogant demeanor despite losing a majority in the Lok Sabha, which Sen sees as a “lack of comprehension of what actually happened.”

Furthermore, Sen expressed dismay over the Modi government’s treatment of acclaimed writer Arundhati Roy, denouncing it as “just dead wrong” and indicative of a broader disregard for civil liberties.
