Lahore: Bangladesh has simplified its visa process for Pakistani nationals, a move aimed at strengthening trade and economic relations between the two South Asian countries. This initiative was announced by Iqbal Hussain Khan, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, during a meeting at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).
According to a statement by Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the High Commissioner emphasized that the Bangladeshi government has eliminated the requirement for clearance from Dhaka for Pakistani heads of missions. This development is seen as a significant step toward increasing trade and investment between Bangladesh and Pakistan, with collaboration with LCCI being crucial in this effort.
The High Commissioner further noted that the trade potential between the two nations remains largely untapped, despite Bangladesh’s substantial consumer market of 180 million people. He highlighted the importance of mutual trade opportunities and the role of South Asian cooperation, advocating for the revitalization of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation to enhance regional collaboration.
Reflecting on recent trade data, LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad stated that the bilateral trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh reached $718 million in the fiscal year 2023-24. Pakistan’s exports were valued at $661 million, while imports from Bangladesh were $57 million. The President expressed a strong desire to increase the trade volume to at least $2 billion, emphasizing sectors such as Information Technology, Pharmaceuticals, and Automotive Parts.
In addition to streamlining visa processes, the High Commissioner and LCCI leaders discussed the importance of regular exchanges between business communities to explore new opportunities and deepen market understanding. The LCCI President assured full support in fostering trade and investment relations, highlighting the role of the Honorary Consul General of Bangladesh in facilitating dialogue between the two countries.
The meeting underscored the commitment to continued collaboration through governmental, business, and diplomatic channels to build a stronger economic partnership. Optimism for future bilateral relations was expressed, particularly following a recent meeting between leaders of both nations in Cairo, which opened new avenues for cooperation in trade, investment, and defense.
