CDWP Approves Projects Worth PKR 224 Billion to Encourage Foreign Investment

Islamabad, The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has sanctioned nine significant development projects, amounting to PKR 224 billion, aiming to bolster international financial support from various multilateral and bilateral sources.

According to Zameen.com on November 4, the CDWP’s decision was made during a session presided over by Dr. Jehanzeb Khan, the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. The endorsed projects encompass vital sectors such as food and agriculture, education, energy, and others, crucial for the nation’s development. In total, five projects were directly approved by the CDWP, amounting to PKR 10.02 billion. Four more extensive projects, cumulatively valued at PKR 213.86 billion, have been recommended to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for further consideration.

Among the projects greenlighted is the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Security Support Project, budgeted at PKR 24.64 billion, designated to aid farmers impacted by the 2022 floods. Funded entirely by the Asian Development Bank and the Japanese government, this initiative poses no fiscal load on the provincial budget. Additionally, the Sindh School Rehabilitation Project has been approved with an allocation of PKR 83.19 billion to reconstruct and modernize schools in 17 districts affected by natural calamities.

The Women Inclusive Finance Development Programme, another significant undertaking supported by the Asian Development Bank with more than USD 100 million in loans, is estimated to be around PKR 31.41 billion. Its objective is to spur economic growth by enhancing women’s entrepreneurial capabilities.

The CDWP also gave its nod to a pivotal water sector project in Sindh, with a budget of PKR 74.62 billion, to improve the efficiency of barrages, thus aiding water management and agriculture in the area.

Additionally, the CDWP has passed five other development schemes, including the Rehabilitation of Schools in Balochistan Affected by Flooding, at PKR 1.4 billion, aiming to restore educational facilities devastated by floods. Moreover, the first phase of housing for Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) refugees since 1989 in Azad Kashmir, which includes constructing 750 houses with a budget of PKR 3.1 billion, has also been approved.
