Islamabad, In a significant move towards enhancing climate resilience and innovating sustainable disaster management strategies, the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) and the National Institute of Disaster Management, Pakistan (NIDM), signed a Letter of Agreement on April 4, 2024. This agreement aims to bolster cooperation, coordination, and resource mobilization in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters.
According to Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South, this collaborative effort will focus on mitigating the impacts of climate change and natural disasters on vulnerable communities. By combining their expertise and resources, COMSATS and NIDM-Pakistan plan to integrate climate considerations into their operations. The partnership will encompass joint research, knowledge sharing, technology transfer, and capacity building initiatives across various sectors such as health, agriculture, and water resources, aiming to enhance the resilience of communities to climate-related challenges.
Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Nafees Zakaria of COMSATS and M. Tanveer Paracha of NIDM signed the agreement, marking the beginning of a concerted effort to improve climate resilience and disaster preparedness through knowledge exchange, policy advocacy, and technology implementation. This partnership underscores the organizations’ commitment to safeguarding communities against the adverse effects of climate change and natural disasters by fostering sustainable solutions.
COMSATS, known for its role in leveraging science and technology for sustainable development, brings to the table its extensive experience in capacity building, research, and the deployment of technological solutions. NIDM-Pakistan, as a think tank under the National Disaster Management Authority, offers its expertise in policy advisory, research, and capacity enhancement for effective disaster management.
The signing ceremony was attended by key stakeholders and representatives from various governmental bodies, highlighting the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in building a resilient future for Pakistan and beyond.
