Congress President Accuses Modi Government of Undermining India’s Education Sector

New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the Modi government for significant budget cuts that he claims are damaging India’s educational structure.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Kharge stated on the social media platform X that “The BJP-RSS is intent on destroying India’s education sector through relentless cuts. This year’s budget slashes higher education funding by a staggering Rs 9,600 crore—a reduction of 16.38 percent.” He condemned the government’s fiscal strategies, which have affected the funding for key educational institutions and regulatory bodies.

Kharge also noted that premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have experienced funding reductions for the second consecutive year. He specifically pointed out a drastic 61 percent cut in the budget of the University Grants Commission (UGC), asserting that such actions have compromised the UGC’s autonomy and its role as the principal grant-giving entity in the country.
