Deputy Chairman Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority calls on the Prime Minister Gilani

Islamabad: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani directed the Deputy Chairman ERRA to focus on completion of ongoing projects at the earliest. He assured him that despite financial constraints and other challenges the Government is committed to allocate requisite funds for the completion of the remaining projects in the earthquake affected areas on a fast track basis.

The Prime Minister was talking to Lt. Gen Sardar Mahmood Ali Khan, Deputy Chairman ERRA who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House here this afternoon.

The Prime Minister appreciated to progress of work being assigned to ERRA which has been duly recognized at international level through “UN Sasakawa Award 2011”. While a lot has been done, he added, yet the completion of remaining projects be undertaken as a challenge.

The Prime Minister further asked ERRA to give preference to social sector projects particularly reconstruction of schools and health facilities to easy the difficulties of the people. The connectivity within the affected areas through repairs and reconstruction of roads and bridges, he added, would help to bring back life to normalcy and need to be given due attention.

Earlier the Deputy Chairman ERRA Lt. Gen. Sardar Mahmood Ali Khan briefed the Prime Minister on the progress of work on reconstruction and rehabilitation projects in various sectors. He apprised the Prime Minister that 6854 projects in various sectors have been completed while 4061 projects mostly in education and health sectors are under construction. Most of these projects are nearing completion requiring timely release of funds. He assured the Prime Minister that his directions to complete the projects within stipulated time period would be followed in true spirit.

The remaining projects in some areas, he mentioned, would be initiated as soon the funds committed both by the Government and the international donors are available. He further informed that governance projects like reconstruction of District and Tehsil Headquarters, water supply schemes and infrastructure are being coordinated with respective stakeholders to complete the same as per their requirements.
