Dubai, Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, revealed plans to invest a staggering $950 million in constructing a new, ultra-modern engineering facility at Dubai World Central (DWC). This expansive project, covering 1 million square meters, aims to create the most advanced and largest engineering complex operated by any airline, significantly enhancing Dubai’s aviation infrastructure.
According to Emirates, the engineering complex is designed to support the airline’s fleet and operational needs well into the 2040s. It will also serve as a commercial aviation engineering hub in the Middle East, potentially offering services to other airline operators. This announcement was made at the Dubai Airshow by HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airline and Group. He highlighted the project as a testament to Emirates’ confidence in the aviation sector’s growth and its commitment to self-sufficiency in maintenance, repairs, overhaul (MRO), and engineering for its aircraft fleet.
The new facility will offer a wide range of specialized aircraft engineering services, including routine checks, bespoke paint jobs, extensive maintenance programs, engine repair and testing, cabin interior fit-outs, and aircraft conversions. Ali Mubarak Al Soori, Emirates Group Executive Vice President – Facilities, Projects Management and Group Procurement and Supply Chain, detailed the project’s timeline, stating that construction of Phase 1 is set to commence in 2024 and conclude in 2027. This phase includes the development of 8 maintenance hangars, 1 paint hangar, an engine run-up facility, numerous support workshops, vast storage areas, and administrative offices. Furthermore, the project has been designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating green building materials, solar panels, and recycling systems for oils and wastewater.
Phase 2 of the project, envisioned for future expansion, could potentially double the facility’s capacity, aligning with the growth of Emirates’ fleet and operational needs. While the new complex at DWC is being developed, the existing Emirates Engineering Centre at Dubai International (DXB) will continue supporting the airline’s operations. The DWC facility will initially handle heavier maintenance programs and spillover work.
ADP Ingénierie has been appointed as the project consultant for this ambitious undertaking.
