DUBAI, In a significant move to extend the operational life and efficiency of its A380 fleet, Emirates, the world’s leading international airline and the largest A380 operator, has announced investments exceeding USD $1.5 billion. This initiative, unveiled at the Dubai Airshow 2023, marks a major step in enhancing the performance and reliability of the airline’s iconic double-decker aircraft fleet well into the next decade.
According to Emirates, the airline has forged partnerships with a wide array of aviation service providers, including Honeywell, Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, Safran, Lufthansa Technik, OEM Services, Gameco, Haeco, and others. These collaborations are aimed at offering a comprehensive range of aviation aftermarket and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services. The agreements, totaling over USD $1.5 billion, were signed at the sidelines of the Dubai Airshow.
Emirates’ strategy involves leveraging the expertise and capabilities of these partners to ensure the A380 fleet maintains its high standards of operational efficiency and quality. The scope of services includes maintenance, repair, overhaul, parts provisioning, component repairs, and technical support. This concerted effort aligns with the airline’s commitment to quality, promising its customers continued enjoyment of its signature onboard products and services.
Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, emphasized the A380’s integral role in the airline’s history and future. He remarked on the aircraft’s impact on passenger comfort and travel opportunities and reaffirmed Emirates’ commitment to maintaining the fleet’s prime condition. The A380, will remain a core component of the airline’s network for the next decade.
The agreements cover various aspects of the A380’s maintenance. Collins Aerospace will support the Main Landing gear overhaul program, while Safran Landing Systems will provide exclusive services for the Nose Landing gear. Honeywell will supply wheels and carbon brakes for 116 A380 aircraft, with maintenance to be conducted in Dubai.
Additionally, Emirates has extended its agreement with OEMServices for component support and signed a maintenance support agreement with Pratt and Whitney for the PW980 Auxiliary Power Units.
Lufthansa Technik will provide Base Maintenance Services for the A380s, including additional C Checks over the next three years. The C Checks will be performed at Lufthansa Technik Philippines in Manila. Agreements for A380 C Checks have also been signed with Gameco and Haeco in China, starting in early 2024.
The airline’s ongoing retrofit program, worth USD $2 billion, aims to refresh the onboard experience across all cabin classes, including the installation of new Premium Economy Class cabins. So far, 16 of the 67 earmarked A380s have been upgraded and are in commercial service. Emirates operates close to 90 A380s, with more expected to join the fleet soon.
