Ethiopia to Enhance Cargo Services and Flight Operations from Karachi

Karachi, Ethiopian Ambassador Jemal Beker Abdula announced upcoming expansions in Ethiopian Airlines’ operations from Karachi, aiming to increase the current four weekly flights to daily services. This enhancement is intended to support Pakistan’s Look and Engage Africa Policy by improving connections to over 70 destinations across Africa. Additionally, efforts are underway to introduce Ethiopian cargo services to Pakistan, which could significantly boost trade and logistic links between the two nations.

According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, during a recent meeting at their headquarters, Ambassador Abdula discussed the past success of Ethiopian Airlines in Karachi and outlined future plans to expand these services. The introduction of cargo services is expected to facilitate the export of numerous Pakistani goods globally, enhancing the economic ties between Ethiopia and Pakistan.

The meeting was well-attended by various dignitaries, including KCCI’s President Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh and other senior officials, who discussed the strengthening of business relationships through increased trade and investment opportunities. Ambassador Abdula emphasized Ethiopia’s rapid economic growth and its position as one of the most stable countries in Africa, presenting a lucrative market for Pakistani investors.

Key sectors identified for potential Pakistani investment include agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing, and mining. The Ethiopian government offers incentives like tax holidays and support in over 40 specialized industrial zones, aiming to attract foreign direct investment into these promising sectors.

Plans for a trade delegation of over 100 Pakistani businessmen to Ethiopia were also highlighted, scheduled from May 26 to May 31, 2024, marking a significant step towards bolstering bilateral trade relations. The meeting concluded with calls for enhanced cooperation, addressing trade barriers, and the potential of strategic partnerships to tap into the vast markets of Central Asia and Africa through the economic corridors of CPEC and SIFC.
