Extended Paramilitary Deployment in West Bengal Amid Post-Election Violence Concerns

Kolkata, Following the Lok Sabha elections in India, the Election Commission has decided to extend the deployment of 400 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) in West Bengal until June 19 due to concerns over potential violence and riots.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the results of the Lok Sabha elections are set to be announced on Tuesday. Originally, the paramilitary forces were scheduled to withdraw from the state two days after the results. However, due to the heightened risk of violence, the presence of CAPF has been extended to provide stability and security.

The forces deployed include units from various branches of India’s paramilitary structure: 115 companies from the Central Reserve Police, 118 from the Border Security Force, 71 from the Central Industrial Security Force, 60 from Sashastra Seema Bal, and 36 from the Indian-Tibetan Border Police Force.

In response to recent large-scale incidents of post-poll violence, the West Bengal government has also imposed Section 144 in 17 constituencies of Sandishakhli, restricting assemblies and movements to prevent further unrest.
