FPCCI Applauds New Measures to Address Port Delays and Cargo Issues

Karachi: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has expressed support for recent initiatives aimed at improving trade efficiency at Karachi ports. During a stakeholders meeting led by Customs Appraisement South, significant measures were announced to address container grounding delays, cargo mishandling, and restricted terminal hours. Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of FPCCI, highlighted the importance of these steps in removing operational bottlenecks that have hindered trade.

The meeting was attended by prominent trade bodies, including the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Karachi Customs Agents Association, among others. The discussions focused on persistent trade issues such as delays in container grounding, incidents of cargo damage, and limited delivery hours at off-dock terminals.

In response, the Chief Collector Appraisement South, under the guidance of the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue, outlined directives to extend cargo delivery hours, employ trained packers for cargo handling, and adhere to strict timelines for container grounding.

Mr. Sheikh praised these developments, emphasizing the longstanding concerns of the business community. He affirmed FPCCI’s commitment to collaborating with the FBR and other stakeholders to enhance the ease of doing business and support legitimate trade and industry.

Asif Sakhi, Vice President of FPCCI, also present at the meeting, highlighted the positive impact of these directives on reducing delays and protecting cargo. He underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue and quick implementation to bolster Pakistan’s trade competitiveness globally.
