FPCCI Engages with Chinese Delegation to Boost Economic Ties and Explore Trade Opportunities

Karachi: In a significant move to enhance bilateral trade and investment opportunities, the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) hosted a high-profile delegation from The China Asia Economic Development Association (CAEDA) to discuss potential collaborations in various sectors.

According to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, FPCCI President Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh outlined the delegation’s focus areas, which include mines and minerals, information technology and IT-enabled services, agriculture and livestock, food processing and storage, infrastructure development, and renewable and alternative energy sources. This visit underscores the deepening economic ties between Pakistan and China, facilitated by ongoing projects like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the frameworks established under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Mr. Sheikh emphasized the strategic importance of the next phase of CPEC and SCO initiatives, which he believes are poised to significantly impact the national economy due to geographical contiguities, economic complementarities, and regional trade advantages. He also highlighted Pakistan’s strategic direction to diversify its economic partnerships, particularly by strengthening ties with eastern neighbors.

Mr. Abdul Mohamin Khan, Vice President of FPCCI and Regional Chairman, reported a notable increase in bilateral trade following the implementation of the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement (CPFTA), with trade volumes now exceeding $20 billion. This growth reflects a robust economic relationship that continues to expand across various sectors.

Mr. Shabbir Mansha, Chairman of FPCCI’s Pakistan-China Business Council, detailed the current trade dynamics, noting Pakistan’s key exports to China, which include cotton yarn, rice, refined copper, and other primary commodities. Conversely, China remains the largest source of imports for Pakistan, including high-demand items such as semiconductor devices, mechanical appliances, and high-tech components crucial for various industrial sectors.

Leading the CAEDA delegation, Mr. Qian Qiu Zhu, President of the Cross-Border Trade Development Committee, expressed the association’s objectives to further solidify trade relations. Key initiatives proposed include establishing a Pakistan Zero-Tariff Trade Zone, setting up a service center in Pakistan for Chinese imports, and exploring new sectors for economic cooperation.

The discussions between FPCCI and CAEDA mark a progressive step toward enhancing bilateral economic relations and tapping into the vast potential for mutual growth between the two nations.
