Germany Expands Business Ties with Pakistan, Eyes SME Collaboration

Karachi, The German government and businesses are increasingly focusing on Pakistan to bolster business and investment relations, as indicated by the recent activities of the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce (AHK). Muhammad Usman, Pakistan’s Representative in AHK, highlighted this shift during a visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Usman emphasized Germany’s interest in enhancing the collaboration of German Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with Pakistani counterparts. This initiative will be supported by AHK through networking, business-to-business meetings, and trade delegation visits. The announcement was made during a gathering that included key figures such as Andreas Wegner, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Consulate in Karachi, and several KCCI officials.

The leader of the German delegation from AHK, which has a presence in 93 countries, noted the establishment of a Pakistan desk in Dubai last March. This desk aims to foster regional business relations, including with Pakistan. He acknowledged the potential sectors for collaboration, such as renewable energy, sustainable textile, and leather sectors, as suggested by KCCI President Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh.

German SMEs are eyeing opportunities in the region, considering the proximity to markets like China and India. Initiatives include exploring collaborations in sustainable sectors and energy infrastructure projects in Pakistan. The delegation also highlighted the ease of connecting German companies based in Dubai with Pakistani businesses.

President KCCI Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, while welcoming the delegation, reflected on the longstanding diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Germany since 1951. He expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral relations and emphasized the importance of Germany’s role in regional stability and economic development. Sheikh also pointed out a slight decrease in Pakistan’s exports to Germany, suggesting a need for reduced trade barriers and diversified trade to boost economic integration.

The transfer of German technology to Pakistan was highlighted as a key factor in enhancing the productivity and competitiveness of Pakistani industries. Opportunities for German investment in various sectors, including dairy, agriculture, textiles, IT, and infrastructure, were also underscored.

This move marks a significant step in fostering closer economic ties between Germany and Pakistan, aiming to benefit businesses and economies in both nations.
