Bonn, The Government of Germany will host the Desertification and Drought Day 2024 on June 17 in Bonn, marking the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This key environmental observance aims to unite international efforts to sustain healthy lands and combat desertification.
According to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the event, themed “United for Land: Our Legacy. Our Future,” will convene leaders from government, academia, and civil society, along with young innovators from around the globe. The participants will focus on land restoration, enhancing resilience to drought, and leveraging technology for sustainable agricultural practices. The day’s agenda includes the introduction of the UNCCD’s new cohort of Land Heroes and insights into the upcoming COP16 negotiations set for December in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The program will also spotlight the critical role of youth in driving significant changes in land management.
The significance of the event is underscored by alarming trends: land degradation affects up to 40% of the world’s land area, and desertification poses severe threats to global food security and stability. The observance will take place at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, aiming to foster a comprehensive dialogue on these pressing issues and explore effective solutions for future generations.
