Heavy Rains in New Delhi Claim 11 Lives, Disrupt Flight Operations

New Delhi, A sudden and severe downpour has resulted in the deaths of 11 people in New Delhi, including four who drowned in submerged underpasses. The heavy rainfall, which is the most significant the city has seen in decades, also caused disruptions at the capital’s main airport, leading to numerous flight cancellations.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the extreme weather event followed one of the city’s worst heatwaves earlier this month. The rainfall on June 28 alone exceeded the city’s average for the entire month, causing extensive damage including a roof collapse at one of the three terminals at Delhi’s main airport. This incident disrupted flight schedules, led to significant flooding of underpasses, spawned widespread traffic jams, and resulted in power and water outages across several parts of the city.

FlightAware reported that nearly 60 flights were canceled at New Delhi’s main airport in the last 24 hours. While operations mostly normalized by Sunday, with flights from the affected terminal being diverted to the other two, airport officials have not dismissed the possibility of further cancellations throughout the day. The Delhi airport ranks as one of the busiest in the country.
