IHK people face harassment ahead of Manmohan’s visit

Srinagar, June 22, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the people are being harassed and victimised in the name of so-called security measures ahead of the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the territory on Tuesday. The people have to suffer immensely as the security has been beefed up across the Kashmir Valley. The entire occupied territory has been turned into a military garrison and people are being denied free movement.

The police and paramilitary CRPF personnel have been deployed in strength in sensitive areas of Srinagar and other places, where the Indian Prime Minister is scheduled to visit. The movement of people is being monitored through closed circuit cameras.

Meanwhile, the police and paramilitary personnel conducted a crackdown operation in Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas in Srinagar. Eyewitnesses said that all traffic between Residency Road and Amirakadal Bridge was suspended and people present along the one kilometre stretch were asked to queue up for frisking. They said that the policemen also frisked the passers-by, checked their belongings and identity cards. They added that vehicles parked in area were also searched thoroughly.

The vehicles entering into Srinagar are being checked at the entry points. The frisking and random checking of vehicles is being carried out at Rambagh, Humhama, Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma, Ghanta Ghar and other parts of the city.

Heavy contingents of Indian troops and police personnel have been deployed enroute Banihal-Qazigund, where Manmohan Singh is scheduled to flag off rail services. Media reports said that three-tier security arrangement would be made in entire south Kashmir on the occasion.
