Jammu: Indian police have detained three individuals under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Kathua district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The arrests have drawn attention due to the controversial nature of the PSA, which allows for detention without trial for up to two years.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, one of the detainees has been identified as Mohammad Rafiq, a resident of Ghar Malti in Kathua. The police have accused the individuals of being a “threat to public peace and tranquility.”
The authorities have justified the detentions by labeling the individuals as over-ground workers supporting the ongoing freedom struggle. This reasoning has been used in the past to suppress dissent against India’s presence in the region.
The detainees have been relocated to different jails in Jammu, Rajouri, and Udhampur, further complicating their legal situation and access to family or legal support.
