Islamabad: India is facing allegations of continuously violating the Indus Basin Agreement by delaying the mandatory annual meeting of the Indus Water Commissioners for the past two years.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Indus Basin Agreement stipulates that the commissioners from India and Pakistan must convene annually to discuss water management and bilateral concerns. Despite repeated requests from Pakistan’s Indus Water Commissioner, Mehr Ali Shah, for a meeting, there has been no response from the Indian side.
The last commissioners’ meeting took place in New Delhi on May 30 and 31, 2022, and under the terms of the agreement, the subsequent meetings are to alternate between the two countries. These meetings are critical for discussing flood data, river flows, and controversial projects that could affect the rivers flowing into Pakistan.
