Delhi: India has reached out to Germany for assistance in expediting a free trade agreement with the European Union, amid growing global trade barriers. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during his visit to Delhi, emphasized the importance of reducing trade barriers between Germany and India, contrasting the protectionist measures being adopted by other countries, such as the United States. His Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, echoed the sentiment, expressing hope for German support in the ongoing EU trade talks.
According to Deutsche Welle, both Wadephul and Jaishankar acknowledged the ambitious goal of doubling their bilateral trade volume. During a press conference held in Delhi, Wadephul expressed satisfaction with the shared vision of achieving this target. Jaishankar, in turn, highlighted the need to accelerate negotiations with the EU to address core priorities and overcome existing challenges.
The trade negotiations have encountered significant hurdles, primarily concerning import duties and regulatory standards. The EU is advocating for reduced import duties on automobiles and dairy products, areas where Germany has vested interests. Additionally, the EU is pressing India for stricter commitments on climate and labor standards. Conversely, India is determined to protect its farmers, avoid stringent environmental regulations, and maintain control over potential legal disputes. Despite these differences, recent developments in US trade policies have injected urgency into the EU-India discussions. The US recently imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports, prompting both the EU and India to seek a resolution.
Wadephul’s visit to India included engagements beyond trade discussions. In Bengaluru, he toured a Mercedes-Benz research and development facility and interacted with representatives from the Indian Institute of Science and German software giant SAP. In Delhi, Wadephul engaged in a display of sporting diplomacy by participating in a field hockey event alongside German star Moritz Fürste and Indian legend Sardar Singh. Wadephul remarked on the importance of teamwork and collaboration, drawing parallels between the sport and the political arena.
Meanwhile, back in Berlin, Green party co-chairman Felix Banaszak urged Wadephul to extend his stay in the region to address the Afghan refugee crisis. Banaszak called on the foreign minister to visit Pakistan and negotiate a solution to prevent the deportation of Afghan refugees sheltering in Pakistan. The Greens have been advocating for the resettlement of Afghans who aided German forces and NGOs prior to the Taliban’s resurgence in 2022. Banaszak highlighted the pressing need for Wadephul to secure a deal with Pakistan to facilitate the safe relocation of these individuals to Germany.
Wadephul, in response, mentioned that he had already discussed the matter with his Pakistani counterpart, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, and had received assurances of Pakistan’s willingness to cooperate, contingent upon the eventual resettlement of refugees in Germany. The Green party continues to press for decisive action, emphasizing the humanitarian urgency of the situation.
