India Tops Global Chart for Undernourishment, UN Report Finds

New Delhi: India now has the highest number of undernourished individuals worldwide, reaching 194.6 million. The ‘State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World’ report outlines significant concerns over food access in India.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the report was crafted by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in cooperation with four other UN bodies, including UNICEF. The analysis highlights the scale of undernourishment across the nation and provides a grim view of the challenges in meeting basic dietary needs.

Undernourishment, as characterized by the FAO, identifies when an individual’s regular food consumption fails to fulfill the dietary energy requirements for a healthy and active life. This measure is crucial for understanding the broader implications of hunger on public health and wellbeing in India.
