Indian diaspora in fear: Modi govt’s secret war on critics revealed

Washington DC, A recent investigation by Vox Media has uncovered systematic efforts by the Indian government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to suppress dissenting voices across journalists, activists, and minority communities. This campaign includes various forms of harassment, surveillance, and digital threats aimed at silencing criticism both within and outside of India.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the report details the pervasive climate of intimidation being fostered by the Modi administration. One significant case is that of Kashmiri journalist Raqib Naik, who sought refuge in the United States following severe harassment and threats in India. Even after Naik’s departure, the harassment extended to his family in Kashmir, indicating the lengths to which the government is prepared to go to target dissenters.

The investigation highlights a disturbing trend of transnational repression, with the Indian government’s efforts reaching as far as the US, where Naik continued to receive anonymous threats and was subjected to surveillance. Additionally, the report documents extensive digital harassment against opponents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), characterized by a barrage of hateful online messages and threats.

The involvement of US federal agencies, including the FBI, in addressing the threats faced by Naik underscores the international ramifications of the Indian government’s actions and the global concern they have sparked.

The report calls for international accountability for the BJP-led government and emphasizes the need for a unified effort to safeguard the fundamental rights of journalists, activists, and minority communities, thereby upholding the principles of democracy and justice.
