Indian Police Attach GPS Device to Bailed Kashmiri Youth

Srinagar, Indian police have recently implemented the use of a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking system on Mudasir Fayaz, a Kashmiri youth, in what is described as a controversial move affecting privacy and freedom of movement in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the GPS device was affixed as part of the enforcement of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the Chadoora area of Budgam district. Police claim the action is legally supported by a court order, stating that the device is intended to monitor Fayaz’s movements while he is under trial.

This incident follows a pattern, as just a day prior, another Kashmiri under-trial in Baramulla was similarly monitored after being released on bail. The use of such tracking devices began in November 2023, with 65-year-old Ghulam Mohammad Butt from Srinagar being the first recorded individual to be subjected to this measure.
