Indian Troops Accused of Killing Nearly 2,000 Kashmiris Since 2016

Srinagar: Since the extrajudicial killing of Kashmiri youth leader Burhan Muzaffar Wani by Indian forces on July 8, 2016, there have reportedly been 1,934 deaths among Kashmiris, including cases of alleged fake encounters and custodial deaths, in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to Kashmir Media Service, these incidents have also left 159 women widowed and 393 children orphaned. The report further details that Indian military, paramilitary, and police forces have used excessive force against civilians, resulting in over 30,000 injuries from bullets, pellets, and tear gas during protests and public gatherings.

The death of Wani, along with two associates, in what has been described as a staged encounter, ignited widespread civil unrest in IIOJK, marked by significant casualties and injuries among protestors in the months that followed.
