International workshop on Earthquake vulnerability reduction June 11-22, 2012, Nathia Gali, Pakistan

Islamabad, June 13, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education, Nuffic, has organised a refresher course on reducing earthquake vulnerability through generating seismic micro zonation maps using geo information (GIS/Remote sensing).

The course is in collaboration with the National Centre of Excellence in Geology, University of Peshawar, the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, University of Twente (ITC- UT) in The Netherlands and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) in Bangkok.

Participants from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan will be attending this 2 week refresher course in Nathia Gali. It is the fourth such course organised by NUFFIC in Pakistan after the devastating earthquake of 2005.

The course comprises of an overview of earthquake hazard management and the role of geo- information and earth observation, the sustainable use of geo-information for hazard and risk assessment and earthquake vulnerability reduction measures, by government organizations and also by NGO’s,

The fellowship officer of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was the chief guest at the inauguration of this course and she remarked “The devastating earthquake of 2005 brought the world to Pakistan with assistance and aid. I am pleased that the Netherlands Government is still contributing 7 years later with technical assistance and expertise not only to Pakistan but to the whole region.”

This continuation highlights the strength of the cooperation between the two countries.
