Islamabad Marks International Day of Potato to Highlight Crop’s Global Importance

Islamabad, Today marks the observance of International Day of Potato, a global event that celebrates one of the world’s top staple food crops. The day is dedicated to recognizing the significant role potatoes play in addressing hunger, poverty, and environmental challenges within agricultural systems.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the United Nations General Assembly designated May 30 as International Potato Day in December of the previous year. This annual observance aims to highlight the potato’s versatility and its crucial role in sustainable agriculture and food security worldwide.

The event emphasizes the potato’s importance in bolstering agri-food systems against environmental threats, thereby supporting global efforts to combat hunger and poverty. As a staple food, potatoes rank among the top five most essential crops globally, underpinning the dietary needs of millions.
